We have been back in Abu Dhabi (AD) now for just over one month, and finally got away for the weekend of 31st August, 1 September. We decided to go over to Fujeirah/Fujairah – depending on which map or sign you are looking at – to see some of the sights over on the east coast.

Even with a distinct lack of signage, we managed to find our way to Fujeirah quite easily, although over six hours in the car was not a great deal of joy. I think we were all releieved to get to our motel, but we did see some different sights throughout the day. In one of the smaller towns which we passed through, there were camels just wandering around the streets/buildings. On further was a herd of goats under a trees by the side of the road and it was very unnerving thinking they could just step out onto the road (if so, a cheap feed for the night).

It is amazing the number of speed humps on the roads throughout the emirates, and a lot of caution must be taken as in a lot of cases there is very little, or no signage warning of this. On our return journey we almost became one of the victims of the speed humps, and had to brake very hard. Managed to take a lot of speed off before hitting the hump, but would have liked being a lot slower for it. We did make it over a bit shaken up (literally, at the speed we hit), and faired a lot better than one car we saw at a roundabout.

One idiot in his sedan went flying past us approaching a roundabout and a the last minute (he was in the r/a) decided he was going too fast for it and braked heavily. The back out and naturally he tried to correct it and oversteered sending the back out way too far in the other direction, and nearly flipped it. We managed to get a great view of it from about 20 metres behind, and was like watching it all in slow motion – heads and bodies bouncing all over the place in the car. It must not have phased the driver too much as once they finally got through the r/a, they were tearing up the road again. Some people will never learn!

We did see quite a bit of the country, but being so frigging hot, it was not very often that we got out of the car to explore a bit more. Maybe in the cooler months when it is possible to spend time outside, we will do the trip again and be able to get out of the car. It was a relaif to get to the motel and go for a swim in the pool – or so we thought. The room was not the best, and lacked a bit of finesse, but what do you expect for 485 dirhams – it was still liveable. A nice swim would make us feel better! Crap – it was like someone had filled the pool with water from the hot tap, and that feeling you get when yo go under in freezing water you also get when the water is stinking hot! The only relief from the heat was to get out and get the breeze to cool you down, then get back in and do it all again. At least they don’t need to install a jacuzzi!
